GALAXRY

In Taiwan, People generally lack of aesthetics. Most of them take art pieces in the gallery as luxury goods. However, those pieces can be the best teachers of aesthetic education for free.

This is my story of designing 'Galaxry' - a website and app that transform galleries into learning spaces. This  allows students to be able to see art outside of a textbook, interact, and be more hands on with their educational process.

Project Overview

This is an ongoing individual project first requested by Chicony Power, a global technology company based in Taiwan that focuses on smart home design. At first, they asked me to design a high-tech gallery to save labor and electricity cost. However, after finished the user research, I realized that Taiwanese need a fundamental aesthetic reformation. Hence, I changed the design goal to aesthetic education.

Challenge

Based on the user researches and environment observations, there are two ingrained conundrums about galleries in Taiwan.

  1. People usually have a misunderstanding about galleries, thinking those places are for the rich not for everyone.

  2. People often can't understand what concept does the painter want to convey through the art pieces.

Design Directions

Viktor Lowenfeld, one of the most famous professors of art education, said, ''The goal of art education tends to equip the individual with creativity throughout the process, regardless of where the creativity would be implemented.''.

Hence, this project focused not on cultivating more artists but trying to trigger the interest of art inside every one's heart.

User studies

Persona

The main target users of 'Galaxry'. One is focused on audiences (Students), the other one is focused on owners.

My Role

As an UX designer, I -

  • Conducted user researches such as interview, question inquiry and persona to uncover the insights of gallery owners and spectators.

  • Executed field researches about galleries by using physical models, sequence models and the blueprint.

  • Brainstormed solutions for different pain points, translated concepts into features and finally designed delightful and useful digital products

  • Created frameworks, wire frames, mock ups to share the vision, design principles and content strategy. This help to test the product usability.

Wireframe

After conducting user studies, it became more clear what screens I needed to design, so I drew the first version prototype and tested if there were any bugs.

During the time testing the app and the webpage's usability, I also started to design the user interfaces' final outcomes.

Final Design

The first main function of 'Galaxry' is that it will distinguish  spectators into three different levels( elementary, medium, and proficient) in order to customize the best lecturing gallery for them at the first time they use.

Second important function, after spectators enter the gallery, the app will use different games which is based on their level to help them easily understand and get involve to the exhibition.

The left one is for elementary level spectators, trying to let them understand the importance of  proportion in painting by playing puzzles

This is for medium level spectators, the app will ask them to observe the style of the painting and drew a object can match the same style.

The  last one is for proficient audience, which will only use questions to lead them think deeper and broader since they already has the basic creative thinking abilities

Third, the webpage is for gallery owners and artist to match up each other and efficiently work together for different kinds of exhibitions. They can discuss the details online, including artists' contracts and the environment of the gallery. Also, they can spend the time they save to build up the data base of what they want audiences to learn from their art pieces.

Future

use more broader, design more game. EX supermarket teach math, temple teach history
